The return of the Champions league knockout stages this week saw a classic encounter at the Bernabeu between a very tactically astute Manchester United team and an extremely talented Real Madrid side.

Los Blancos dominated and dictated the flow of the game, which finished 1-1, and should prevail in three weeks time at Old Trafford if Alec Ferguson is brave/stupid enough to attack Madrid and leave the space in which they can kill teams off so ruthlessly on the counter-attack.

The game for the real connoisseurs of European football was the 2-2 draw between Shakhtar Donestk and Borussia Dortmund, although there was cautious play at times, the slick passing and intelligent movement was a joy, and sets up what will surely be a fantastically entertaining 2nd leg.

Celtic were complaining of cowardly refereeing in their 3-0 home defeat to Juventus, but really the difference between the teams was vast when it came to Juve’s ability to move the quickly with one-touch passes that had a certain graceful swagger that was totally absent from Celtic’s hardworking yet technically very average players.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic displayed his excellent Karate skills in Valencia when he was red carded in PSG’s 2-1 win at The Mestalla, a score-line you’d imagine seeing the multi-billion petro-dollar funded Parisians through to the quarter-finals in March.

Next week’s 1st leg knockout games have some more tasty fixtures to look forward to, including AC Milan v Barcelona; the bookmakers have made Barca the overwhelming favourites for this one, and as an Over 2.5, but I wouldn’t trust Milan’s ability to score, and Barca’s tendency to keep possession for the sake of it could make for a tight game.

Porto v Malaga could be a better bet for an Over 2.5 goal game at 2.25 euro odds – 5/4, the Portuguese club’s fans demand attacking high scoring football, while Malaga’s debut season in the competition has been exciting and full of creative, forward thinking football.

Arsenal are in for a very tough test against Bayern Munich at the Emirates stadium; last year’s runners-up are having an incredible season, 15 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga, they’ve won 9 of their 10 away games and only conceded one goal, in a 1-1 draw at Nürnberg.

I’d expect Bayern to win this game at 2.15 euro odds – 23/20, Arsenal are not a team who knows how to sit back and absorb pressure, while Bayern’s experience and superior ability in possession should see them emerge narrow winners.
