Everton v Tottenham

The final weekend of the Premier League has not been especially generous for stand-out games. Nevertheless, it is a relief to at least have a competitive matchup like Everton v Tottenham.

Although Everton have faltered this season, they can win this game to have the chance of a top-half finish. West Ham are just one place behind in 11th and level on 47 points with an equal goal difference of minus one. The Hammers play away against Newcastle, so there is every chance they can win.

Tottenham start this game one point behind Liverpool in fifth place, while Southampton lurk one point behind in seventh. Finish in sixth place and Spurs will be guaranteed of Chelsea’s Europa League spot, as Capital One Cup-winners Chelsea are obviously headed for the Champions League.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is an extremely demanding man. He wants Mauricio Pochettino to improve on former manager Tim Sherwood’s sixth-place finish from last year.

Expectations

Playing Thursday nights in the Europa League left Everton too tired to excel in their Premier League matches this season. Since exiting Europe’s secondary club competition, there have been signs of a revival.

In spite of disappointing losses against Aston Villa and Sunderland, Roberto Martínez will appreciate that his side rebounded with a 2-1 away win over West Ham. A little magic will be needed from Romelu Lukaku and Kevin Mirallas if Everton are to win.

Tottenham had a nightmare 3-0 loss away against Stoke two games ago, but Pochettino was able to rebound with a not particularly convincing 2-0 home win over Hull City.

Hotshot striker Harry Kane has cooled off in recent weeks, as has Christian Eriksen, leaving Nacer Chadli to carry the attacking burden. Goals for Kane and Eriksen in a Spurs victory would be a positive end to the season.

Tottenham have a relatively healthy squad to select from, which bodes well. They also have the fourth best away form in the league, whereas Everton are 11th at home. Tottenham owe their fans a good performance.
