Ireland v England – Free Tips & Match Preview

Aston Villa youngster Jack Grealish is unfortunately responsible for the controversy ahead of this international friendly scheduled for Sunday 7 June at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

The English-born 19-year-old is eligible to play for Ireland through its grandparents, and has done so up to under-21 level. He is currently undecided as to whether to represent Ireland or England as a senior international.

Ireland and England rarely need an excuse to compete with one another, but this time there is the added tension over Grealish. Moreover, both sides have an upcoming Euro 2016 qualifier to prepare for.

Expectations

Ireland have only lost once in Euro 2016 qualifying under manager Martin O’Neill, but will have a tough time progressing to the final tournament behind Germany, Poland, and Scotland. A positive performance against England would serve to galvanise the team and raise morale.

O’Neill will be pleased by the quality of players at his disposal. Séamus Coleman always provides quality from right-back, while John O’Shea is a veteran presence at the heart of defence with his 100+ caps.

Midfield talent includes the speedy Aiden McGeady, the tough-tackling James McCarthy, and the attack-minded Jonathan Walters. Robbie Keane and Shane Long then provide goal-scoring threats. Condition-permitting, all are likely to start.

England have enjoyed the comfort of playing in a Euro 2016 qualifying group that is devoid of a worthy competitor. Thus, Roy Hodgson’s men have jumped ahead with a six-point lead after winning all five of their games. The Three Lions have been in good form and appear more confident in front of goal.

Although England are still to find their ideal first-11, Hodgson understands who his best players are. Wayne Rooney, Raheem Sterling, and Jordan Henderson will each be expected to contribute to an England win in Ireland.

Trying to argue for an England feels difficult here. Despite playing in an easy Euro 2016 qualifying group, they have acquitted themselves well in winning a perfect five from five. The friendly nature of the game also means there is a greater chance of goals.
