Manchester City v Chelsea – Free Tip

England’s two richest clubs will face off against each other this Sunday in the mid-afternoon match at the City of Manchester stadium. The visitors, Chelsea, have scored 16 goals in their previous 6 Premier League outings, while hosts, Man City, have registered an average of 2.2 goals per game at home this season.

There have only been a tiny percentage of games involving the top four in the league that have not been entertaining and goal-strewn this season; one of those encounters was the 0-0 draw between these two sides back in late November, in which the home fans booed their own team before kick-off because of the sacking of their champions league winning manager, Roberto Di Matteo.

A strange, bitter atmosphere and an ultimately stale game was not helped by the negative stifling tactics of Chelsea’s newly appointed interim manager Rafael Benitez, and the typically cautious “away from home” approach from his opposite number, Roberto Mancini.  The game on Sunday should be a more open affair and I can see their being over 2.5 goals being scored at 1.8 euro odds or 4/5.

There are a few key factors why this match should be a more entertaining and attacking spectacle; firstly, the circumstances of both clubs are different, three months on and with only 12 games left, City must win at all costs to maintain any chance of catching Man United and Chelsea are in a dogfight with Spurs and Arsenal for the two remaining champions league qualifying positions.

The need for all three points at this stage of the campaign as opposed to a cagey and difficult game in November will make for a far more open game of football. Benitez is also playing different personnel to the first game at Stamford Bridge; gone from the team is the rather sluggish midfield shield, Jon Obi Mikel, and in will come the increasingly regular and more defensively fragile pairing of Ramires and Frank Lampard.

Lampard is another reason why we may see more goal attempts in this game; the prolific England International has proved his importance to this club yet again, after his re-introduction to the side he has scored 11 goals in 13 starts, making him Chelsea’s leading scorer in the league at 34 years of age, and he’s only 4 goals away from becoming their all-time leading goal-scorer, in what may be his final season for The Blues.
