2016 Champions League Final Preview & Tips: Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid

The city rivals Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid have reached the Champions League final for the second time in three years. Diego Simeone’s men will be looking forward to avenge the defeat they suffered in the Lisbon final in 2014.

Both the Spanish capital teams were in the running for the La Liga title but Barcelona clinched the trophy on the last day of the season. However, the two Spanish giants have an opportunity to end their season with a silverware. Another Spanish side, Sevilla reigned supreme in the second tier of the European competition. After Thursday’s triumph over Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, Unai Emery’s men have now sealed three back-to-back Europa League trophies.

Atletico defeated the German champions Bayern Munich, the Spanish champions Barcelona and the Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven in the knockout stage of this season’s Champions League. Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid, on the other hand, had a comparatively easier road to the final as they met Roma, Wolfsburg and Manchester City after the group stage.

In the two league meetings in the 2015/2016 season, Los Rojiblancos have had an upper hand with a win and a draw. Atleti beat Los Blancos 0 – 1 at the Santiago Bernabeu in February and were held to a 1 – 1 stalemate at Vicente Calderon.

Real Madrid were in a brilliant form in La Liga as they won all of their last six league fixtures while Atletico Madrid’s perfect record was tarnished by Levante earlier this month.

The historic rivalry between these two clubs makes this clash more delectable. This final will be the sixth tournament final to feature two teams from the same association, the third all-Spanish final, and the second between teams from the same city, fielding exactly the two teams that faced each other in the 2014 final, making it the seventh repeated final pairing.

Will Real Madrid win their 11th European Cup or can Atletico clinch their solitary Champions League trophy? Only time will tell. Mark Clattenburg will be the match referee for the final scheduled on May 28 at San Siro in Milan.
