Peru v Paraguay – Copa America 4 July 2015

Saturday 4 July will see Peru take on Paraguay in the 2015 Copa America third-place playoff. Both teams have played admirably in this year’s tournament, each managing to claim second place in their respective groups when teams like Uruguay and Colombia were more fancied by pundits.

Peru made it past Bolivia in the quarter-finals with a strong 3-1 display, while Paraguay edged past Brazil in penalty shootout to decide their 1-1 draw. However, fortunes then diverged because Peru defended staunchly against a superior Chile side in a brave 2-1 defeat, whereas Paraguay crumbled 6-1 in the face of world-class Argentinian attackers.

Expectations

Paraguay will feel extremely low after losing 6-1 to Argentina. Even though they have the chance to restore a modicum of pride by finishing third, it will be difficult to rebound in three days after being embarrassed so badly by Argentina.

In contrast, Peru will currently feel excellent about their chances. Jose Paolo Guerrero managed to net a hat-trick against Bolivia and is solid form, while Jefferson Farfán is a potential live wire who could spark to life at any moment.

Paraguay lined up with their dated 4-4-2 to play an Argentina team that had packed the midfield with three bodies in the centre. Víctor Cáceres and Richard Ortiz simply could not get the better of Argentina’s trio, giving up 60% of possession in the process.

Another questionable decision was to line up with two strikers when an extra body in centre of the park would have given them a much better chance. That decision gets worse when you consider that the extra striker was a 33-year-old Roque Santa Cruz who is now badly starved for pace.

Peru head coach Ricardo Gareca has made consistently better tactical decisions when compared to Paraguay head coach Ramón Díaz. The decision-making of Gareca combined with the low confidence of Paraguay will give Peru the edge for this third-place playoff on Saturday.
