Swansea v Man Utd – 30 Aug 2015

Swansea City had an excellent start to the season when they managed to frustrate Chelsea and earn a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge. That was followed up with a decisive 2-0 home win versus Newcastle, but they were unable to win two-straight after drawing 1-1 away in Sunderland.

Nobody expected Man Utd to begin the season with three clean sheets from their first three games. Most analysts believed that Man Utd’s defence was going to struggle without resolving the David de Gea situation or signing a top-class centre-back. Their real problem, however, has been an inability to score goals. This will be a problem against Swansea on Sunday.

Expectations

Garry Monk’s team have been known for holding their against better teams by playing physically and managing to retain a reasonable share of possession. Against Chelsea, the Swans were able to hold 48% possession and also create 10 shots on target. That is quite unusual for Swansea and could be a sign that they will could win even more games this year.

Louis van Gaal finally found success last season when he played with a 4-3-3. In typical van Gaal fashion, however, the outspoken Dutchman is playing with a 4-2-3-1 to accommodate Memphis Depay and Adnan Januzaj. To play a 4-2-3-1, the excellent Ander Herrera has been sacrificed.

This is a problem because Man Utd’s attacking play in the final third has struggled without him. But do not expect this to change any time soon because the classy Spaniard did not even appear from the bench. Swansea are an extremely team difficult to play if you are struggling, which is why Man Utd’s scoring issues could continue.
