Portugal have fought their way to the knock out stages of Euro 2016 after a dramatic match against Group F winners Hungary. They now face another stern test in Croatia in the round of 16 clash on June 25th.
Croatia defeated the reigning European champions Spain in their last group game to seal their place at the top of Group D. Prior to the commencement of Euro 2016, Jose Mourinho described the Croatians as the dark horses of the tournament. Their two wins and a draw in a group which consisted of Spain, Czech Republic and Turkey is not in any way a small feat. Croatia can definitely reach the later stages of the tournament, even the final as they won’t a face previous winner of the tournament until the final.
Portugal, on the other hand, have struggled in France so far. But make no mistake, Fernando Santos’s men are no pushovers. The Portuguese national team has experienced and world-class players in their ranks, who can change the outcome of any big game.
Cristiano Ronaldo opened his tournament goal tally in the 3 – 3 stalemate against Hungary. The Real Madrid stalwart was named the Man of the Match as he bagged two goals and an assist. The 31-year-old was also Portugal’s best player in their match against Austria, despite missing a crucial penalty. Ronaldo will be hard to contain, but the Croatians have the momentum on their side.
These two sides have met only thrice prior to their clash in Lens on Saturday. Portugal have beaten the Croats in all the previous meetings, but Croatians can make it 3 – 1 after June 25th.
