Harry Redknapp’s high flying Tottenham Hotspur play host to Champions, Manchester United, at White Hart Lane this Sunday tea-time; a fixture that has registered 20 goals in the previous six meetings between the clubs.

Attacking football has been the hallmark of this Premier League campaign; a record of 2.98 goals per game has overtaken the 1967/68 season for the average number of goals scored.

Another record that has been smashed has been the goal ratio in games featuring the top four placed teams in the League – currently an astonishing 7.25 goals per game so far.

This is a match that Spurs must play to win in order to stand any realistic chance of winning the title, and if they play their usual 4-4-2 shape with Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale on the wings, then I’d expect a game full of chances for both teams, especially on the counter-attack for Man Utd.

Spurs usually start games at home with a ferocious pace, therefore claiming an early goal (see below).

Time of 1st Goal (Last 20 Games) – Tottenham

Mins : 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 FT
For : 5 3 2 2 1 3 3 0 0
Against : 1 1 3 1 1 1 1 1 1
Any : 6 4 2 2 1 2 2 0 0

Mau Utd’s last 5 away games:All the signs point towards an over 2.5 goal result in this match, particularly when we look at Man Utd’s recent trips away from Old Trafford (below).

Fulham 0 5 Man. Utd. 21/12/2011
Newcastle 3 0 Man. Utd. 04/01/2012
Arsenal 1 2 Man. Utd. 22/01/2012
Chelsea 3 3 Man. Utd. 05/02/2012
Norwich 1 2 Man. Utd. 26/02/2012

When you also consider that Spurs have not failed to score at White Hart Lane this season (averaging 2.2 goals per game), then this encounter looks like it will be another entertaining top four clash, full of kamikaze defending and goalmouth incidents.

Poor defending has been another (unwanted) hallmark of the Premier League’s elite clubs this season and is undoubtedly the main reason for their unanimous early exits from the Champions League.  With all this current media talk of high goal-counts, there is of course a chance that both managers could play it safe on Sunday, and we may witness a stale-mate.

However, with Redknapp trying to impress the English F.A’s hierarchy and Alec Ferguson striving to keep pace with Man City, we are more likely to see a goal-fest.
