International Break – No Tips This Week..

We have an International break underway at present, with the entire world’s top flight divisions suspended until the weekend beginning 31st March. European World Cup qualifiers make up half the fixture list, while Africa and South America roughly make up the rest of the games.

With around fifty competitive matches on Friday and the following Tuesday you would think that there should be at least three reasonable Over/Under 2.5 results to pick out. International football can be very tricky though, for a few reasons; because you have such a disparity between the qualities of football nations, the odds are severely reduced to that of Club football e.g. Spain v Finland (Spain are clearly the No.1 team in the world, and Finland are a mid-ranked side, 87th out of 207) is only 1.07 euro odds – 1/14 for a Spain win, whereas Barcelona to beat a mid-table Spanish team would be more like 1.4 euro odds – 2/5, because of the much higher quality of La Liga.

Picking winners in International games can be very easy, but it’s usually not worth it due to the poor odds. Home advantage, of course, plays a big part in these national games, and this in turn can give opportunities to bet on a higher ranked away team playing a supposedly smaller football nation, but you should avoid these pitfalls because some teams cannot be trusted to adjust to another country’s environment.

For example – Israel v Portugal – this Friday has Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portuguese side as overwhelming favourites at 1.57 euro odds – 4/7, but this does not reflect the reality that, even though Portugal are ranked 7th and Israel 74th, the Israelis are ahead of them on goal difference in Group F after four games played for both teams. Portugal are notorious stutterers when it comes to qualifying, and Tel Aviv is a difficult place to travel to and get a result, especially since the Portuguese have lost 2 and drawn 2 of their previous 4 fixtures (friendly and competitive).

There is a knock on effect when it comes to finding good Under/Over bets too; England play away at San Marino (ranked 207th) were the odds for an Over 3.5 goal result are 1.17 – 1/6, while the Spain v Finland game is still just 1.33 – 1/3 for an Over 2.5 goal result.

The other real problem in determining an Under/Over result is gauging the form of International teams, because they play so few games. There a lot a very closely matched sides coming up against each other too, big crunch games like Croatia v Serbia, Scotland v Wales, Poland v Ukraine, where it is very hard to say how the game will develop because of the intense rivalry and atmosphere.
